About Castelo de Bode Dam

Castelo de Bode is one of Portugal's most important water supply reservoirs, providing drinking water to the greater Lisbon metropolitan area — serving approximately 3 million people. Located on the river Zêzere in the Ribatejo region, the double-curvature arch dam was completed in 1951 and stands 115 metres tall with a capacity of 1,095 million cubic metres. Beyond its critical water supply role, the reservoir generates significant hydroelectric power and supports recreational activities including sailing, kayaking, and swimming. The surrounding landscape of pine and eucalyptus forests, combined with the lake's crystal-clear waters, has made it a popular destination for domestic tourism. The dam was one of the first major hydroelectric projects built in Portugal and remains a cornerstone of the country's water infrastructure.
